we spotted this little beauty last weekend in japantown on the way to the cherry blossom festival. it couldn’t have looked any more pristine when it rolled off the factory floor in 1959, right down to the perfect black upholstery with orange piping! yum!

sutro baths circa 1890's

“What couldn’t you see at Sutro Baths? Egyptian Mummies? Stuffed birds, stuffed apes, stuffed snakes fighting stuffed jaguars? Totem poles? Cigar-store Indians? How about tropical plants? Pinned insects? Coin collections? Photograph collections? Fine Art Collections? They were all there. Oh yes, you could also see up to ten thousand bathers (the capacity, by the owner’s estimate) swimming, diving, sliding, swinging, soaking and lolling about.” –  from http://sutrobaths.com

Opening in 1896, and burning down in a “mysterious fire” in 1966, the ruins of the Sutro Baths are now part of the Golden Gate Recreation Area. There are stairs to nowhere, tide pools, crumbling archways and blasting waves from the Pacific, all nestled below the Cliff house just north of Golden Gate Park. It is one of my favorite places to spend a sunny day in SF. Here are a few shots from our trip there today…

trishula1i’ve considered making a blog consisting only of the things that i feel such an intense desire to possess for my own but know i never will, in hopes that it will somehow exorcise them from me. like the papua new guinea ancestors skulls at the de Young, the purple dolly parton andy warhol (also at the de Young in the andy warhol ‘live’ exhibit) and the lovely item above, just to name a few. this is a trishula from 19th c tibet. it was mounted on a temple rooftop as a protective symbol. one of a matching pair, the set can be had for $42,000. available at xanadu gallery which is located at 140 maiden lane in san francisco (see my earlier post about this amazing building by frank lloyd wright).
